You put a bait station under the kitchen sink in June. Ant traffic dropped for four days, then came back heavier. By mid-July a second trail was running behind the dishwasher. What usually fails is the match between the bait you bought and the species on your counter.
Texas A&M AgriLife Extension's household ant guide covers eight ants, seven of them regular indoor pests, plus leaf-cutting ants, which rarely come inside. They do not all take the same bait, and the guide puts identification first because the species is what tells you "what kind of control measures are most effective" [1].
Quick answer: DIY ant baits usually fail for one of six reasons. The bait was built for a different species, the matrix was sugar when the colony wanted grease, the kill was too fast to reach the queen, a repellent spray broke the trail, the colony has multiple queens, or the bait was pulled too early.
UC IPM's ant guidance explains the mechanism behind most of those failures. It is California guidance, and the species it covers include odorous house, Argentine, and pharaoh ants, all of which live in Texas homes as well. On baiting it says "the pesticide must be slow-acting so workers won't be killed before they get back to the nest," after which the bait is "transferred mouth to mouth to other workers, larvae, and queens" [2]. That transfer, trophallaxis, is the only route a bait station has to a queen you never see.
Plenty of Austin homeowners fix an ant problem with a hardware store bait station. DIY wins in one shape of problem: a single trail from one species, worked by someone willing to leave the station alone.
Most often that ant is the odorous house ant, small and dark, smelling faintly of coconut or blue cheese when crushed, and it takes sweet bait readily. UC IPM's ant key recommends sweet baits for them, including boric acid products at less than 1% active ingredient [3]. UC IPM still cautions that baits alone will not usually control this species, so sanitation and exclusion have to run alongside [3]. Put the bait directly on the trail and clear competing food off the counter. Apply nothing else nearby, then wait the 5 to 10 days UC IPM says it takes before ant numbers drop [2].
It stops working once several species are involved, or once the ant is one that walks straight past retail bait.
Texas A&M's guide names red imported fire ants, carpenter ants, acrobat ants, pharaoh ants, crazy ants, odorous house ants, rover ants, and leaf-cutting ants as the household species in Texas [1]. Any retail gel is formulated for a subset of that list.
The sharpest example in the Austin metro is the tawny crazy ant. Texas A&M's Urban and Structural Entomology Program confirms them in Travis, Hays, and Williamson counties and states that "tawny crazy ant workers are not attracted to most bait products" [4]. AgriLife's management publication calls baits "only marginally effective at long-term management of established TCA populations," with ants moving back into a treated area within 2 to 4 weeks [5].
With carpenter ants, the question changes from pest control to building repair. AgriLife's carpenter ant fact sheet describes them nesting "especially near a moisture source" and tells homeowners to look for frass, the shavings pushed out of a nest [6]. A carpenter ant trail in a bathroom is a plumbing lead first.
Fire ants need a different method again. The Texas Two-Step approach broadcasts bait across the whole yard first, then treats only the problem mounds that remain. Timing carries as much weight as the material [7]:
Retail shelves lean toward sweet gels, which becomes a problem when the colony wants protein. Texas A&M's Managing Household Ant Pests bulletin puts it plainly: "Some ant species feed mostly on sugar or sucrose, while others prefer oils or proteins" [8]. Preference also moves with the season: UC IPM reports sweet baits attract Argentine ants year-round, protein baits mainly in spring [2].
Rover ants catch out a lot of homeowners in the Austin area. Texas A&M's School IPM program reports these tiny dark ants in homes throughout South Central Texas, and notes that while rover ants "will eat sweet foods when they get really hungry, they seem to be most attracted to foods containing protein, such as dog food or meat" [9]. A sweet gel on a rover ant trail can sit untouched for weeks.
Put a dab of sweet bait and a dab of a protein or oil-based bait on a card near the trail, then check after 30 minutes. Whichever one has ants on it tells you what to buy. Texas A&M's bulletin describes the same setup for a different job, filling bottle caps or squares of aluminum foil with sugar water, peanut butter, or bacon grease as food lures to find where ants are nesting [8]. The card answers for the day you run it, since preference moves through the season.
A product that drops ants within an hour is doing contact-kill work under a bait label. UC IPM's guidance for gardens and landscapes is blunt: to spread underground, "baits MUST be slow acting" [10]. The forager has to survive the walk home and the mouth-to-mouth feeding that follows [2]. UC IPM names two that fail that test: "bait stations with propoxur or indoxacarb aren't very effective, because the active ingredient is too fast-acting" [2].
Professional fire ant baiting looks slow for the same reason. AgriLife describes broadcast baits as "slow-acting and require weeks to months to achieve 80% to 90% control" [7].
This one cancels everything else you do, and both extension services warn against it directly. Texas A&M's guidance reads: "Do not spray long-acting contact insecticides... Sprays prevent foraging worker ants from reaching the bait" [8]. UC IPM says the same in one line: "Don't use any insecticide sprays while you are using baits" [2].
Many retail perimeter sprays are pyrethroids, and Texas A&M lists permethrin and bifenthrin among the contact insecticides that repel ants [8]. Ants avoid a treated surface rather than crossing it, so the trail reroutes around the band and the foragers that would have carried your bait home go elsewhere. Spraying the trail achieves less again, since "insecticide sprays kill only the foraging ants; more ants will emerge from their nests" [10].
AgriLife's tawny crazy ant publication says a nonrepellent insecticide containing fipronil, applied to the exterior perimeter twice per year, "may provide protection from TCA" [5]. Ants walk through a non-repellent zone instead of around it, the opposite behavior from a barrier spray.
Most homeowners bring one mental model to ant control: a single nest with a single queen. Several of the species in Austin homes do not work that way.
Odorous house ant colonies "have multiple queens" and start new ones by budding, "which occurs when a mated queen crawls out of the nest with some workers to establish a new colony" [11]. Tawny crazy ant colonies are polygyne, and Texas A&M notes that no mating flights have been observed in the field, so they propagate by budding at the nest edge [4]. Argentine ant colonies link into a supercolony with multiple queens [2], and pharaoh ants bud as well [8].
Destroying one nest can therefore be an afternoon's work that changes nothing, because the population sits across satellite nests you never found. Bait is the right tool here precisely because it reaches those nests, but only when the failures above have been avoided.
Texas A&M's bulletin recommends 20 to 30 small bait stations placed where ants have been seen, run for at least 3 to 4 weeks [8]. If you put out four stations and pulled them on day three, that is the failure.
Growing numbers at a station mean the bait is being found. Texas A&M's bulletin describes how: "Foraging workers of some species secrete chemical (pheromone) trails to lead other ants to food and water" [8]. The first workers to reach a new station bring the rest, so leave the bait where it is.
AgriLife's fire ant guidance also says to "use fresh bait, preferably from an unopened container" [7]. A half-used bag in the garage from last summer does not qualify.
The EPA's description of integrated pest management explains why the order matters: monitoring and identification "removes the possibility that pesticides will be used when they are not really needed or that the wrong kind of pesticide will be used" [12]. For ants that means naming the species, under magnification when the ant is small, before anything is bought.
The inspection that follows looks for the nest and the entry point, and for the moisture that put a carpenter ant colony into a wall in the first place [6]. Fixing a leaking hose bib does more than any bait will. What gets bought comes out of those two steps: the matrix first, meaning sugar, protein, or oil, then an active ingredient slow enough to survive the trip back to the nest [10]. Texas A&M's bulletin names abamectin, fipronil, hydramethylnon, borax and orthoboric acid among the slow-acting ingredients used in household ant baits [8].
Pesticide labels are legally enforceable, and the EPA notes that "it is a violation of Federal law to use this product in a manner inconsistent with its labeling" [13].
Natran Green Pest Control's ant work in Austin runs in the order above. A technician identifies the ant on site, then looks for the nest and the moisture feeding it. What that inspection finds decides the bait matrix and the active ingredient. Each product is applied according to its label.
Baiting a multi-queen species takes more than one appointment. The bait stays in place for the 3 to 4 weeks the extension guidance calls for, and nobody judges the result before the 5 to 10 days it takes for ant numbers to start dropping. At the return visit the technician refreshes or switches bait if feeding preference has moved, and rewrites the plan if the identification turned up tawny crazy ants.
A search for eco-friendly pest control in Austin returns a list of companies, and the listings say little about method. The question worth putting to any provider is procedural: who identifies the ant before anything is applied, and what happens at the follow-up visit.
If you have run two or three rounds of retail bait this summer with no durable result, get the ant identified before you buy anything else.

You should not, if the spray is a repellent product. Texas A&M's guidance is that long-acting contact insecticides "prevent foraging worker ants from reaching the bait" [8], and UC IPM says plainly, "Don't use any insecticide sprays while you are using baits" [2]. Repellent products push ants away from treated surfaces, so the trail reroutes and the bait never gets picked up. Professionals combining perimeter work with baiting use non-repellent materials.
Tawny crazy ants top that list. Texas A&M confirms them in Travis, Hays, and Williamson counties and states that workers "are not attracted to most bait products" [4]. AgriLife adds that baits are "only marginally effective at long-term management of established TCA populations," with reinvasion typically inside 2 to 4 weeks [5]. Fire ants are also poorly served by indoor-style stations, since they need broadcast bait on Two-Step timing [7].
Not necessarily, though it does mean you should go looking for water. Texas A&M's fact sheet describes carpenter ants nesting "especially near a moisture source," and notes that Texas species "are not usually destructive to homes," with damage typically limited to isolated pieces of wood [6]. Look for small piles of frass and trace them back to the leak that softened the wood.
