In Texas, we’re blessed with glorious warm weather! Even in December, most Texans enjoy temperatures upwards of 60°F.
We’re super grateful
that we get so much sunshine in the Lone Star State, but there is something small and irritating that comes with warm weather… Mosquitoes!
Mosquitoes are common (and particularly unpopular) pests in the United States. Not only are they really annoying, they can give itchy bites and spread diseases.
Mosquito season and temperature fall hand in hand. There are mosquitoes that hibernate in the colder months, and other mosquitoes that hatch in the spring.
The general rule is that mosquito season usually begins in a location when it has experienced an extended period of temperatures of around 50°F. Because Texas is so warm, mosquito season is, more often than not, year-round.
In most cases, the warmer and more humid the weather gets, the more mosquitoes there will be. So, you can expect there to be more mosquitoes around in the summer, and fewer mosquitoes in spring and autumn. Because Texas is so close to the third coast, you can expect higher levels of humidity… so even more mosquitoes!
If temperatures drop to around 50°F or below, you’re going to see a decrease in the number of mosquitoes around. Mosquitoes that don’t hibernate will die when these temperatures hit, and those that do hibernate will retire into burrows and hollow logs until the sun comes out again (although they might come back out on warmer winter days).
When you should start mosquito control will depend on when mosquitos begin to hatch in your area. Mosquitoes can begin to hatch within 7 days of a period of 50°F heat.
Living in Texas means you should really consider having mosquito control year-round because it’s rare for the temperature to drop below 50°F for extended periods of time, even in the winter.
Even if there’s a freeze, it’s unlikely to wipe out mosquitoes completely. This is because, to have any real impact on the mosquito population, there would need to be a prolonged period of freezing temperatures. Not the few day periods of cold that we sometimes get in Texas.
