Flea and Tick Treatment

Elevate your home’s protection from fleas and ticks with preventive treatments from Natran.

Fleas and ticks are pests that feed on blood meals to survive. Fleas are insects that typically live outside in the grass of your front and back yard, but they can infest your home.

Similarly, ticks, while part of the arachnid family, tend to live in thicker brush or trees, but can also wind up inside where they can bite pets or people (especially if your neighborhood has deer!).

Fleas will take a bite and move on to their next blood meal, while ticks burrow under the skin to get constant access until they’re engorged. Any time you encounter fleas or ticks, you and your pets are at risk for things like tapeworms, allergic reactions, or even bloodborne pathogens.

How do fleas and ticks get inside my house?

Most people assume that fleas and ticks get inside the home through family pets that go outdoors. But most pests get inside the same way you do—through the front door. Doors and windows are far more common points of entry than coming in through the walls. And while they can wind up inside by attaching themselves to your dog or cat, that cracked window or open door serves as an invitation to come into your home.

Once inside, fleas will often burrow into your carpet and lay eggs, starting a life cycle that requires, at minimum, a two-step treatment to help ensure the infestation is gone. While ticks tend to be more problematic in rural or forested areas, they can still affect homes that back up to water sources like creeks, or greenbelts ripe with brush. Ticks get inside from you or your pet being outdoors, and they prefer warm, tight spaces like inside socks or waistbands—even your groin or armpit.

I have a pier-and-beam house. Why would I be at risk for fleas and ticks?

No matter what type of home you live in, there’s always a risk for fleas and ticks to get inside and pose a risk to your pets and family. Even if your home is on an elevated pier-and-beam foundation, you are not immune from these pests. Animals like possums, armadillos, raccoons, and feral cats will often carry fleas with them as they move under your home, and the fleas will climb up and into your living space. In fact, the most common fleas, though they may be referred to as “cat fleas” or “dog fleas,” can infest many types of animals, as well as humans.

But my pets are on flea and tick prevention! Why would I need preventive home treatments?

Most preventive treatments for household pets are effective once your dog or cat gets a bite. Flea baths and flea collars are also much less effective than medical flea prevention. However, live fleas can easily get inside on your pet, infest your home, and reproduce quickly. It only takes 15 to 20 days to go from a few fleas to a full infestation.

Signs you have fleas in your home

If you see your pets scratching repeatedly, or if they have recurring ear or yeast infections, or are missing patches of fur, it’s likely they’re suffering from flea bites. On people, you could see small, red bites around the ankles, or on the arms and legs of crawling babies. Some people will wear white socks on carpeted areas or into their yard and look for the actual fleas to show up visibly. Even if you don’t see fleas in your house, if they’re on your dog, chances are you have an infestation inside. If you see any of these signs, it’s important to seek immediate treatment, as it requires multiple visits to help ensure the flea life cycle ends.

How can I prevent fleas and ticks from getting into my home?

Keeping your lawn properly cared for with regular mowing and sweeping helps keep flea and tick issues in check. But to protect your pets and family at a higher level, preventive flea and tick treatment from Natran’s people-, plant-, and pet-friendly products can keep everyone from scratching. With regular preventive maintenance through our green outdoor flea fogging, Natran will fortify your outdoor spaces and stop fleas before they make it to your home or begin feeding on your precious pets. What to look out for

Answers to the most common questions we get asked

  • Preventive care

Monthly outdoor fogging can also help take care of fleas from local cat colonies, raccoons, possums, squirrels, and other vectors for fleas. Natran’s outdoor preventive treatment kills both fleas and ticks, and is performed monthly either all year long, or for the nine-month “peak season” of March through November.

  • Infestation treatment

Whether you have dogs, cats, or other furry friends, Natran is equipped with treatments to help eliminate any type of flea. Natran’s full interior and exterior flea and tick treatment includes one initial treatment that will eliminate active adult fleas, and a second follow-up treatment 21 days later, to take care of newly-hatched juveniles and adults. Like our preventive program, this two-step process treats both fleas and ticks, but because our solution is applied inside your home, it requires a bit of prep work and a short vacancy to ensure proper drying and maximum effectiveness.
