In Texas, we’re blessed with glorious warm weather! Even in December, most Texans enjoy temperatures upwards of 60°F.

We’re super grateful

that we get so much sunshine in the Lone Star State, but there is something small and irritating that comes with warm weather… Mosquitoes!

Mosquitoes are common (and particularly unpopular) pests in the United States. Not only are they really annoying, they can give itchy bites and spread diseases.

When does mosquito season begin?

Mosquito season and temperature fall hand in hand. There are mosquitoes that hibernate in the colder months, and other mosquitoes that hatch in the spring.

The general rule is that mosquito season usually begins in a location when it has experienced an extended period of temperatures of around 50°F. Because Texas is so warm, mosquito season is, more often than not, year-round.

In most cases, the warmer and more humid the weather gets, the more mosquitoes there will be. So, you can expect there to be more mosquitoes around in the summer, and fewer mosquitoes in spring and autumn. Because Texas is so close to the third coast, you can expect higher levels of humidity… so even more mosquitoes!

If temperatures drop to around 50°F or below, you’re going to see a decrease in the number of mosquitoes around. Mosquitoes that don’t hibernate will die when these temperatures hit, and those that do hibernate will retire into burrows and hollow logs until the sun comes out again (although they might come back out on warmer winter days).

When should you start mosquito control?

When you should start mosquito control will depend on when mosquitos begin to hatch in your area. Mosquitoes can begin to hatch within 7 days of a period of 50°F heat.

Living in Texas means you should really consider having mosquito control year-round because it’s rare for the temperature to drop below 50°F for extended periods of time, even in the winter.

Even if there’s a freeze, it’s unlikely to wipe out mosquitoes completely. This is because, to have any real impact on the mosquito population, there would need to be a prolonged period of freezing temperatures. Not the few day periods of cold that we sometimes get in Texas.

Mosquito control options

We offer green pest control options in Houston and Austin, Texas. There are three environmentally-conscious mosquito control options that we offer, and all of them will reduce the number of mosquitoes around your property quickly.

Mosquito fogging

Our botanical-based mosquito fog will be sprayed in your yard by one of our experienced technicians. It’s a fast and effective treatment that removes mosquitoes and prevents them from returning. Mosquito fogging is a wonderful option for keeping mosquitoes at bay for outdoor events, such as BBQs, birthday parties, and weddings.

Mosquito traps

The Natran mosquito traps take into account every aspect of mosquitoes’ reproductive cycle. They prevent your mosquito population from getting any bigger but don’t cause them any harm.

This is the greenest mosquito control option that we offer at Natran and is a highly-effective option for managing mosquitoes throughout the year. The traps themselves are discreet, so they won’t look out of place in your garden.

Mosquito misting systems

Our environmentally-conscious, plant-based misting systems keep mosquitoes away from your property. Once they’re installed by your Natran technician, you can relax. There’s nothing else you need to do! We recommend using our misting systems along with our mosquito traps.
