Asp Caterpillars look cute and cuddly, but their fur-like covering contains toxins that are poisonous to humans. When touched, the bristles can break off into your skin, and exposure to the bristles will lead to an immediate skin irritation. The pain from the bristles has been described by patients as similar to a blunt force trauma or a broken bone. Occasionally the effects are localized to the exposed area, but are often severe, radiating up a limb and causing burning, swelling, nausea, headache, abdominal distress, rashes, blisters, and sometimes chest pain, numbness and difficulty breathing. Please make sure you and your family members stay far away from this “cute” insect!
