Termites are common pests in Texas. So, if you live in Houston or Austin, chances are your home is at risk of a termite infestation. There are three types of termites: drywood, dampwood, and subterranean, all of which swarm.

A termite infestation can go undetected for a long time, but a surefire sign is when you see termite swarmers. Swarming season for subterranean termites begins when the weather starts to get warmer. Swarming season for drywood and dampwood termites is late summer to fall.

Because we’re blessed with such warm weather throughout the year in Texas, our termite swarming season can be from early spring until late summer.

When termites swarm, it’s likely to be during the daytime because they’re looking for the light. They’re also most likely to swarm on still days - often after periods of heavy rain.

Why do termites swarm?

A swarm is the beginning of the termite life cycle. Termites swarm for two reasons: to breed and to start a colony. When a termite colony has reached its capacity, the termites will begin to swarm. This is where they take flight into the air, mate, and then lose their wings. This usually happens once a year.

What do termite swarmers look like?

Drywood, dampwood, and subterranean termite swarmers don’t all look and behave the same.

Drywood termite swarmers have bodies that are around 1/3 inches in length and their wings feature 3 or 4 veins. Their wings will all be roughly equal in length, and they will shed their wings soon after they land.

Dampwood termite swarmers have bodies that are around half an inch in length and their wings feature 2 veins. Their wings will be roughly equal in length and they shed their wings soon after they land.

Subterranean termite swarmers have bodies that are around 1/3 inches long, and their wings feature 2 veins. Their wings will be roughly equal in length and they don’t shed their wings immediately after they land.

What to do if you spot signs of termites

When it comes to termites, the longer you wait, the more damage there will be. And the more damage there is, the more danger there is to your home… and wallet.

Common signs of a termite infestation are:

Seeing termite swarmers, especially near lights or windows
Hollow wood
Piles of wings
Mud tunnels/mud tubes
Wall damage
